Implant Placement Over VS Under the Muscle

Table of Contents

Implant placement is often discussed topic among those that are dissatisfied with their appearance. This perception also negatively affects the psychological state of almost every woman. The peculiarities of the female body are such that not everyone can boast of ideal breasts. A lot of factors play an important role. Breastfeeding, childbirth, weight gain, weight loss, hormones… Under the influence of all this, it is not always possible to have breasts of the volume and form that a woman likes.

For this reason, breast augmentation and reshaping operations are so popular throughout the world. This area of plastic surgery includes several types of operations: breast lift, reduction plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery after tumor removal. But the most popular direction is augmentation plastic surgery – breast enlargement using your fat tissue or implants.

The breast augmentation procedure involves several preparatory steps, one of which is deciding on a rather important question – the location of the breast implants.

Under the Pectoral Muscle

Breast Implant

This method involves partial placement of the implant under the pectoral muscle. This is where the maximum effect is achieved with a minimum of complications. The advantage of this method is the most natural appearance of the upper part of the chest, as the pectoral muscle hides the upper edge of the implant. This method avoids the sagging of the breasts and does not interfere with mammograms.

The advantages of placing an implant under the muscle include:

  • The most natural appearance of the upper breast.
  • Minimal risk of capsular contracture (the formation of a very dense sheath around the implant, which spoils the appearance and causes pain).
  • The implant is barely palpable and does not interfere with clear mammography images of the breast.

The disadvantage of this technique is that it increases the duration of surgery and recovery period. After surgery, swelling can appear, which can disappear for a long time, from several weeks to months. A slight displacement of the implant may occur with active sports exercise, but overall it does not affect the appearance much.

This type of implant placement is especially suitable for slim, thin women with small breasts.

Under the Breast

This technique allows avoiding touching the breast muscle during surgery by placing the implant above it and under the breast. This option of putting the implant is suitable for women who have a sufficiently large volume of glandular tissue in the breast – it allows the surgent to hide the edges of the implant. It is also recommended for those who are actively engaged in bodybuilding: a significant contraction of the breast muscle during sports exercises greatly deforms the implant – in this case, it is better to place it over the muscle.

Advantages of subglandular implant placement:

  • Reduced duration of surgery and recovery period.
  • Minimal swelling.
  • The implant does not change its shape during sports activities.

The disadvantages of this location:

  • It is not always possible to hide the contours of the implant, which can protrude through the skin.
  • It is difficult to obtain a clear image of the breast tissues on the X-ray.
  • High risk of capsular contracture.
  • A large implant under the influence of its gravity can move downward, stretching the skin and contributing to the sinking of the breast.

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but the plastic surgeon always chooses it on an individual basis. Discussing this topic with your chosen doctor can make difference in your satisfaction with the procedure and the results you seek to achieve. The choice of a suitable method is made after a thorough analysis of the patient’s breasts, as well as taking into account the woman’s wishes.
