Who Needs Rhinoplasty?

Medical evidence for this surgery is not only dissatisfaction with the shape and size of the nose, but also nasal breathing disorders due to a curved nasal septum acquired or birth. Therefore, it is usual to divide Rhinoplasty into aesthetic, functional, or mixed.

Aesthetic indications include:

  • Presence of a hooked nose.
  • Nose with a curved tip
  • Nose with a raised tip.
  • Large nasal tip (“snub nose”)
  • Wide or asymmetrical nose wings.

Medical indications for rhinoplasty:

  • The curvature of the nasal septum.
  • Post-traumatic deformity of the shape, curvature, or displacement of the nasal septum.
  • Birth defects that make breathing difficult.

Aesthetic defects are often combined with functional problems: respiratory failure, snoring. Nose surgery helps to correct congenital defects and eliminate the effects of trauma.

How is the surgery done?

As a result of plastic surgery, it is not always possible to achieve an ideal shape that the patient envisions. So the main task of the plastic surgeon is to approach it, taking into account individual characteristics. The future shape and size of the nose can be selected through 3D modeling.

During the surgery, the plastic surgeon solves two problems of the patient: aesthetic – correction of the shape and size of the nose, and physiological – the restoration of nasal breathing by correcting the nasal septum.

There is open and closed rhinoplasty.

Open rhinoplasty is performed when the nose of the patient is severely damaged. If performed correctly, rhinoplasty leaves a completely imperceptible scar. Closed rhinoplasty is a minimally invasive method of correction of shape and size of the nose, performed through the inner cavity without touching the outer skin and leaving no external post-operative scars.

The manipulation technique is selected by the surgeon individually, depending on the situation and the client’s preferences.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the operation depends on the complexity and volume of the operation, on average 2-4 hours. After the surgery, a special modeling bandage is applied to the nose, which fixes the shape of the nose and suppresses swelling.

Rehabilitation

The primary post-operative swelling lasts on average about 10 days, then begins to subside. It should be noted that the intensity of it depends on the individual characteristics of the body.

After taking the modeling bandage off, the so-called secondary swelling lasts 3-6 months. It is not as marked as primary swelling and appears as a slight thickening of the tissues, enlargement of the tip and back of the nose. During this period it is not possible to evaluate the result of the Rhinoplasty, because the swelling hides it.

Within a month after surgery, you should not drink alcohol, go to baths and saunas, or do heavy physical exercises. Failure to follow these recommendations may lead to aggravation of edema, prolongation of the rehabilitation period, and unpredictable results of the surgery.

Evaluate the result can be no earlier than six months after surgery. This is how long the processes of formation and restructuring of all tissues of the nose are.
